Hunter Army Airfield - Polaroids on Post
This Polaroid on Post feature about Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, Georgia is from Blair. She’s lived there for almost 3 years. She’s been a milso for 5 years and she’s moved with her hubby 3 times so far. They are prepping for their 4th PCS and they are heading to Fort Drum next! She never expected to be a military spouse but just like a lot of us, she’s so glad she is. She’s especially grateful for the friends she’s been able to make as a milso, the places she’s been able to explore, and the growth she and her husband have seen in themselves as a direct result of military challenges. If you have any questions about Hunter after reading this post, you can find Blair on Instagram at @blairlbailey
Is there anything you wish you knew before heading to Hunter?
I had to google “Savannah, GA” when we found out it would be our first duty station, so I didn’t have any expectations! Let me tell you though, it was absolutely amazing!!!
What is your favorite & least favorite thing about Hunter?
Favorite: We had a “vacation” every weekend
Least favorite: It can get very buggy in the summer
What is the weather like in Savannah?
It was warm almost year round! The summers can get very hot & you’re 90% likely to never have snow while you’re there.
Did you live on or off post?
We lived off post! We rented near post in Savannah for almost a year until we bought a home in Richmond Hill, GA! About 20 minutes from post. We were able to pocket a bit of BAH by living off post & you will most of the time get a larger house & backyard by living off post.
What should a newcomer know about the installation itself?
Hunter Army Airfield is pretty small! There’s another installation, Fort Stewart, about an hour away. My husband was actually stationed at both, so it’s not unlikely one could start at Hunter & move to Stewart or vice versa. I rarely went on post since we lived off but the times I did go, everyone was super friendly!
Food & Drinks
Do you have any date night recommendations for other milsos?
Pink House- a Savannah classic
Peregrin- located on the top of the Perry Lane hotel, phenomenal views
The Public, Collins Quarter (brunch), Chart House, Little Duck Diner
Where is your go-to spot for brunch?
Collins Quarter is a MUST! They have two locations- Forsyth Park & Bull Street. The one in the park is our go to whenever we have guests come to visit, the view of the park is amazing! You can blindly pick anything off the menu & it will be drool worthy. Little Duck Diner also has great brunch & beverage options! Savannah has numerous brunch options, it’s hard to go wrong with any!
Any other restaurants we should know about?
Pearl’s Saltwater Grille is located on the water with breathtaking views! One of my favorite seafood restaurants ever. Also, the Pirate’s House is another seafood option & has a ton of history (about pirates, duh)!
Add it to the Bucket List
What should a milso add to their Hunter bucket list?
Take an Old Savannah Trolley Tour- hands down the best way to tour Savannah when you first move there
Visit Skidaway Island- pack up the kids & pups & go explore the numerous walking trails with views of the river, marshes & trees
Take pictures at Wormsloe Plantation- talk about Insta worthy!! We took our engagement pictures here, scenes from “The Last Song” with Miley Cyrus was filmed there!
Explore the many islands & beaches- be sure to check out Tybee Island, it’s 20 minutes from Savannah. Jekyll & St Simons Island is about an hour away & is more private. Both are dog friendly! You can also rent bikes to further explore the island.
Take a Georgia Queen Riverboat cruise- they offer cruises for meals or hang out on the top deck & order drinks! Fabulous views of River Street.
Take a haunted ghost tour- Savannah is known for its history & there are many options for ghost tours such as trolley, walking or even riding in a hearse!
Go to the Farmer’s Market at Forsyth Park- they host one every Saturday, 9-1! You can end with brunch in the park! This was our go to Saturday morning date.
Are there any surrounding big cities you took weekend trips to?
St. Augustine is about 2 hours away, stunning & beautiful beach! Atlanta is a few hours. Disney is around 4 hours.
What are some ideas for people with kiddos or families?
There’s a huge playground in Forsyth Park perfect for kiddos! Also, be sure to join the Hunter Army Airfield Facebook groups, there’s tons of events either on or off post for kids! My husband & I had 2 dogs while we lived there & Savannah encourages you to bring your pup with you almost everywhere! Almost all of the restaurants that are outdoors are dog friendly. They even host trick or treating for dogs near Halloween downtown. Also, we were fosters for Renegade Paws Rescue while we lived there. Sooo many deserving pups needing a place to live before getting adopted, it’s so rewarding!
Other Recs!
Realtor- We used Rachel Peterson as our realtor! She’s a military spouse & is the admin for the PCS housing on Facebook. She posts weekly rentals & can help you buy a home before or during your stay there!
