Essential Info!

What is one thing you wish you knew about this duty station before you moved?

I've actually lived here my whole life so I am very familiar with the area but once I married my sailor I had to learn the ins and outs of military life. One thing I never realized was how many different bases we have here in the San Diego County. Each one serves a different purpose but it also gives us lots of options for commissaries, movie theaters, etc.

what is your overall opinion about naval base san diego?

My husband has been assigned to a couple different bases here and each command has been different but I've been so thankful to be stationed here. We live in walking distance of my parents and we have lots of family around.

What should a newcomer know about the installation?

San Diego is huge! There are lots of great communities and neighborhoods in and around the base. You don't necessarily have to live super close to base. You can save some money by living a little more inland. Traffic can be hectic in the mornings and in the afternoon commute. Cost of living is a little pricey but its worth it!

What was the weather like here?

We have amazing weather! It's pretty much always sunny! Not to mention you are in driving distance to the beach, mountains and desert!

What Facebook pages someone new to this area follow or join to stay informed?

For military related info the wives' pages on Facebook are always helpful.

Things to Do…

Date night ideas?

There are so many places! We love heading down to the ocean and walking the beaches or having dinner at one of the water front restaurants.

Where is the best place for coffee?

I don't drink coffee but there are a ton of Starbucks!

Any other restaurants we should know about?

Nothing beats San Diego Mexican Food! It is seriously the best!

Where is your go-to spot for brunch?

Sea Port Village has a lot of great restaurants that over look San Diego Bay and are great for brunch.

Top 5 things to do at this duty station that any milso should add to their duty station bucket list while stationed here!

  • Sea Port Village (waterfront, shops, restaurants)

  • Balboa Park (museums)

  • Beaches

  • Sea World

  • San Diego Zoo

Are there any surrounding big cities you took weekend trips to?

DisneyLand and Knott's Berry Farm are only a couple hours away so you could go for the day or make a weekend out of it. Big Bear is amazing little getaway up in the mountains. Its a great place to rent a cabin and get away. You could also go to Palm Springs for a weekend. Las Vegas isn't too far away either.

Any ideas for people who have kiddos or families? What are some activities they can do, parks they can visit, etc?

We have some amazing kid friendly beaches as well as some amazing parks in all of the communities. We are lucky to live near Sea World and the San Diego Zoo so getting annual passes are great.
