Is there anything you wish you knew before heading to Sill?

Like any duty station, Fort Sill is what you make of it. It might not be as “glamorous” as some posts but there is a lot to do in the region and the area is beautiful, set in the Wichita Mountain!

What is your favorite & least favorite thing about Fort Sill?

  • Favorite: The amount of outdoor activities and the proximity to our family

  • Least favorite: Quality housing can be difficult to find

What is the weather like in Oklahoma?

A great example of somewhere with 4 distinct seasons - the summer is very hot and dry though!

Did you live on or off post?

Off post both times on the east side of Lawton and we have loved it! We also have several friends who have really enjoyed living in Elgin, a smaller town to the north of post.

What should a newcomer know about the installation itself?

What should a milso add to their Fort Sill bucket list?

  1. Medicine Park - a precious resort down about 20 minutes from post with cobblestone streets, a swimming area and many cute shops/restaurants

  2. LETRA - A lake/outdoor recreation area managed by Fort Sill

  3. Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge/Fort Scott - beautiful hiking and scenery, there’s even a buffalo preserve!

  4. Rattlesnake Festival - held in April and allows you to learn all about the area’s native rattlesnakes!

  5. Museum of the Great Plains - provides a great history of the area

  6. Native American cultural centers/festivals (many different tribes have these): Learn about the true settlers of the region and their rich culture in the area today
